SEA Events and Programs

Ball State University Homecoming

SEA enjoys celebrating and participating in Ball State UniversityŐs Homecoming events.  In years past, we have participated in the Homecoming Parade.  We created the theme ŇSpark the Story Spirit,Ó dressed up as our favorite storybook characters, created pamphlets and literacy brochures to promote our theme, and passed the pamphlets and brochures out to members of the audience while walking in the parade.  If you would like to help plan SEAŐs involvement in this yearŐs Homecoming, which is September 27, 2008, please let us know by emailing us at seaballstate@bsu.edu.  Click here to view pictures of this event from previous years.

Indiana Student Education Association Fall Conference

Every year, the ISEA holds a fall conference for pre-service teachers.  This conference gives attendees the chance to listen to honorable guest speakers and participate in breakout sessions and professional development workshops.  This year, the conference will take place Friday, November 7th through Saturday, November 8th at Historic Union Station and Crowne Plaza in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Registration forms are due by Tuesday, October 7, 2008.  The cost, which includes food, housing, and transportation, is $55 for SEA members and $75 for SEA non-members.  Click here to view pictures of this event from previous years.

American Education Week

Every year, one week is dedicated to saluting school staff and educators.  This week is also used to raise public awareness about the importance of education,  make known the accomplishments and needs of local public schools, and gain support from community members to take care of those needs.  During American Education Week, the SEA takes pride in recognizing school staff and educators who help children become successful while keeping them safe and healthy.  This yearŐs American Education Week will take place November 16-22, 2008.  The themes have yet to be announced, so check back for further details.  If you are interested in assisting or planning this yearŐs American Education Week events, please contact us at seaballstate@bsu.edu.

Read Across America

Read Across America is NEAŐs annual reading inspiration and awareness program that encourages every child in each community to celebrate reading on March 2nd, which is the birthday of the well-known childrenŐs author Dr. Seuss.  The goal of this special event is to get children excited about reading.  If students excel in reading and enjoy it, then they are more likely to excel in school and make good grades.  In the past, the SEA held a literacy fair at Washington-Carter Elementary School.  Elementary students walked around the fair with their parents and filled up their passports to win free books.  We have also gone to Wilson Middle School to read to students.  This yearŐs Read Across America Day is March 2, 2009.  Any member interested in assisting or planning this yearŐs Read Across America events should contact us at seaballstate@bsu.edu.

Outreach to Teach

Outreach to Teach is ISEAŐs annual initiative to help out an Indiana school that is in dire need of serious repair.  Each year, SEA members travel across the state to help remodel and renovate a school in disrepair by painting, cleaning, landscaping, decorating, and performing light carpentry.  Students not only get the satisfaction of a hard dayŐs work, but they make lasting friendships with other SEA members and really make the school a better learning environment for its students.  This year, we are lucky and honored to have two of our officers, Kristin Fisher and Wade Fisher, as the co-chairpersons of Outreach to Teach.  Outreach to Teach will take place in Tell City, Indiana on April 19, 2009.  If you are interested in volunteering for Outreach to Teach, contact us at seaballstate@bsu.edu.  Click here to view pictures of this event from previous years.

Pen Pals

This year, SEA members can become pen pals with elementary students from Winston Campus Elementary School in Illinois.  Pen pals range from first grade to sixth grade.  All of the elementary students participating in this program are struggling readers, and many of them have a negative attitude about reading.  Therefore, if youŐre interested in changing a studentŐs life, THIS PROGRAM IS FOR YOU!  All you have to do is write a letter back to your pen pal so that they can hopefully become more interested in reading while improving their reading skills.  Contact Amanda at seaballstate@bsu.edu if you are interested in becoming a pen pal.
