General SEA Meeting - Membership Information
Guest Speakers: Marilyn Edwards, Indiana State Teachers Association & Jenny Mevis, ISEA Vice President

Location/Time: 200A Teachers College/5:30 P.M.
Members were invited to juice and cookies before the meeting.

I.    Introduction
      A.    Amanda introduced the Executive Board.
      B.    Sign up sheet (attendance) went around to members.
      C.    First Speaker was introduced, Jenny Mevis, Student Education Association member, from Manchester College

II.    Jenny Mevis
       A.    Manchester College student teacher.
       B.    What does ISEA mean to her?
              1.    Three people impacted her:
                    a.    Becca, best friend met through ISEA. You can build many relationships with ISEA, not only with students, but also    
                           with teachers.
                    b.    Kay, older adult, with disability. ISEA has allowed her to outreach. Example: “outreach to teach.” Has allowed her to
                           be experienced. “Half of the job as a teacher is the time spent after class.”
                    c.    Juan, kindergarten Hispanic, always smiling, but he is confused. Through ISEA, she was able to go to an ESL
                           workshop, in which she was able to learn to be patience, even if you don’t know the language. Point: Through ISEA,
                           she was able to go to many professional development workshops.
                           i.    Talked about Conferences she went to, in which she has traveled to Boston.
                    d.    ISEA is a professional organization in which it will be very helpful to get your first job.

III.    Marilyn Edwards, ISEA
         A.    19 student Chapters in Indiana, out of 40 teacher-prep institutions
         B.    Fall Conference deadline: end of September.
                 1.    Friday night: Skill development
                 2.    Saturday: Pick four different options of workshops
                        a.    Literacy
                        b.    Agriculture in Classroom
                        c.    What is a teaching contract?
                        d.    Classroom Management: Secondary Schools
         C.    Community: outreach to teach…many opportunities
         D.    ISEA Executive Board 1 of 8 positions.
                 1.    There are many areas to volunteer.
                        a.    Students can sit on ISEA board.
                        b.    Elections are in February for the 8-person board. They also take nominations for the National ISEA.
                               i.    Plan ahead if you want to do this.
                               ii.    Looks for the emerging leader.
         E.    NEA Student Scholarship…national scholarship
                 1.    Indiana has won for 4 years.
                 2.    ISEA Scholarship: more information to come will be due in December.
         F.    Money, Membership dues, $39
                 1.    $15 Washington DC (NEA)
                 2.    $13 Indiana (ISTA)
                 3.    $11 Ball State University Chapter money
         G.    Registration:
                 1.    Website: paper handed out at meeting.
                         a.    Many Benefits, including discounts at restaurants etc.
                         b.    Newest discount: 10% off textbooks from Barnes and Noble, shipping free.
                         c.    Being a student member gives the same discounts as teacher members.
                         d.    A question was brought up about political views:
                                i.    NO dollars are given to promote political organizations.
          H.    Registration for members:
                  1.    (Historian) went through to members how to sign up.
                         a.    Go to the SEA Ball State website: There is a link on the home page. Go from there and follow the registration       
                                 process.
                         b.    Print a copy that you were indeed a student member.
